This journey takes you from the causses and deep ravines around medieval Rocamadour, to arid scenery with birds of prey wheeling overhead. You hike through fertile meadows beside the river, where magnificently situated chateaux and villages, of honey-colored stone, are reflected in the slow-moving waters of the Dordogne River. Walk along the riverbanks that lead up into oak and beech woods.
Trek across fields of ripening wheat to a chateau, or look into the entrance of a cave. Here, hidden within, are magnificent stalactites and stalagmites and the temples of pre-historic man, decorated with pictures of bison, mammoths, deer and bears, dating back from 20,000 to 150,000 years ago. All this, comfortable accommodations and some of the best and most interesting cooking in France!
The route finds its way across rolling, forested hills, with fine chateaux and stone villages, then on to the wider country of the upper Dordogne, with extensive views of the countryside. The terrain of the Dordogne is one of gentle green countryside, and the occasional steep rocky path.
