There are few more pleasant experiences than setting out from the medieval city of Siena and traveling south. Ahead lies the irresistible beauty of the Tuscan countryside; gentle rolling hills, impressive vineyards, olive groves and gorgeous panoramic views.
There are also some of the most historic and picturesque medieval towns, villages and monuments in Europe. Explore the great abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore with its notable frescoed cloister and the Romanesque abbey church of Sant'Antimo, built of alabaster and onyx.
Stroll through the vineyards of two of Italy's most outstanding wine growing areas and stay in a medieval castle. The trip ends with visits to the exquisite Pienza or Montelpulciano.
This region is less visited than the northern part of Tuscany that is a highlight for many. The hiking trails take you across open fields and pastures, country roads, foot trails and through forests. In spring the woods are full of flowers - primroses, violets and cyclamen. In May, you find carpets of deep pink Gladiolas, poppies and orchids. In the fall, grapes are ripening on the vines in September and harvested in October.
